Diablo 4 Murmuring Obols Guide

Murmuring Obols are a special currency used to acquire Whispering Keys and gear of your choosing. There is a catch though, and it is that you can’t carry an unlimited number of this currency, and the gear that you choose has a random rarity. This means that you are not always guaranteed a legendary item when you purchase a piece of armor from the Murmuring Obols Merchant.

How to get Murmuring Obols in Diablo 4

Diablo 4 Murmuring Obols

Murmuring Obols can be obtained by running world events all over Sanctuary. On world tier 2, each event will net you 20 Obols,  however, if you complete the optional Mastery that comes with every event, then your Obol reward will increase to 35, and these numbers will increase as you increase your world level.

Those world events are timed and can be done either solo or in a group, and they usually have you protecting some NPC, defeating gradually increasing waves of monsters, or slaying a big demon.

Alternatively, you can get 50 Murmuring Obols that are contained in a Murmuring Cache when you complete certain side quests.

Where to Spend Murmuring Obols

Murmuring Obols are spent at a special merchant called the Purveyor of Curiosities which can be found in most major cities like Kyovashad. The merchant can be found by looking for a money bag symbol on the mini-map.

When you get to the Purveyor of Curiosities, they will offer you gear with a random chance of either magic, rare, or legendary quality gear. You can also purchase Whispering Keys to unlock Silent Chests all around Sanctuary. Here is a list of items you can buy from the merchant, and how many Obols each item costs:

Item Price
One-Handed Weapon 50 Obols
Off-Hand Weapon 40 Obols
Helmet 40 Obols
Gloves 40 Obols
Chest Armor 40 Obols
Pants 40 Obols
Amulet 60 Obols
Boots 40 Obols
Ring 60 Obols
Two-Handed Weapon 75 Obols
Whispering Key 20 Obols

I recommend you use this merchant to buy gear more often when you are under level 50. This is because it is a good source of legendary-grade armor, weapons, rings, and amulets. After level 50, you have so many other better and more efficient ways to farm legendary gear.

How to increase Murmuring Obol capacity

In Diablo 4, there is a limit of 500 Murmuring Obols that you can carry at a single time when you start the game with a new account.

The capacity and quantity for this currency are shared across all your characters. This means if you increase your capacity on one character, all other existing and future characters will have the same amount of Obols and limit that they can carry.

You can increase the maximum capacity of Obols that you can carry in two ways:

  • Finding Altars of Lilith
  • Unlocking Renown rewards

It is confirmed that once you unlock an Altar of Lilith, it will be unlocked on all your current and future characters on all realms, and some Altars will provide you with a +5 increase to your maximum Obol limit.

The other way to increase your Murmuring Obols limit is by getting level 4 Renown rewards that grant you +80 maximum Obols for each of the five regions you collect it on, and this will give you an additional 400 Obol limit.
