The Griffon was the first flying mount that was introduced in Path of Fire expansion as a secret mount. In this guide, we will go over how you can get a Griffon in Guild Wars 2.
How to get the Griffon
To get the Griffon, you have to own the Path of Fire expansion and complete the story then proceed to complete a series of six collections that will take you over all the maps of the Crystal Desert in search of Griffin eggs and a bunch of other items.
To get started, make sure you have the following:
- A Springer with the High Vault mastery.
- A Jackal (Optional but helpful).
- 250 gold.
To start the series of collections, you have to head over to the Sunspear Sanctuary which is located in the Yahnur Plateau, southeast of the Domain of Vabbi, and then interact with the Remains of the Last Spearmarshal to unlock the collections.
To get the Remains of the Last Spearmarshal:
- Take the Jackal portal in Resplendent Trace, and this will take you to the other side of the mountain.
- Take the second portal using your Jackal.
- Use your Springer to get to the Sunspear Sanctuary.

After completing this collection, it is now time to proceed to Desert Highlands

Collect all the items, then make your way toward Elon Riverlands to continue the series.

Once you completed all the above collections, use Spearmarshal’s Plea to return to the last Spearmarshal and place all five eggs in their respective places by interacting with the icons. Doing this completes the Sunspear Sanctuary collection and unlocks the Sunspear Wisdom collection.
You will earn the Divine Passage which you should take the Tomb of the Primeval Kings. Then reopen the portal to Kormir’s library, and complete the Sunspear Wisdom achievement.
Open Skies: Sunspear Wisdom
The goal is to collect 10 volumes of Writings of the Last Spearmarshal that are hidden in chests and spread all over the library. To unlock those chests, you have to defeat the Elites that can also be found around the library, and take the key that they drop.
Every Cache of Sunspear Wisdom you unlock will consume one key, so you will need a total of 10 keys to unlock them all and get
Once you have all the items, head back to the Remains of the Last Spearmarshal using Spearmarshal’s Plea to complete the last collection, Open Skies: Sunspear Wisdom.
Interact with the large Statue of Kormir that will take you to a solo instance where you have to confront a champion. It’s pretty simple, every 25% the boss will become immune, and you have to get on a Griffon and use swoop to make him immune again.
Griffon Abilities
Ability | Description |
---|---|
Wing Flap | Press space while in mid-air to consume all your endurance, but gain some altitude. |
Swoop | Dive down to engage and dismount. |
Climb | After diving, you can regain your altitude by using the Climb ability. This will slow you down, and you can’t get higher from the point where you dove. |
Dive | While airborne, this ability allows you to dive down and gain increased movement speed. |
Griffon Masteries
Mastery | Mastery Points | Description |

Soaring Rescue | 3 | Allows you to mount and dismount a Griffon while in mid-air. |
Aerial Prowess | 4 | Allows you to dive and pull up. Those two abilities, combined with good momentum makes the Griffon as fast as a Roller Beetle, or even faster. |
Aerial Finesse | 5 | Wing Flap can now be used to gain a burst of momentum while diving or climbing. |
