Guild Wars 2 Generation Two Legendary Weapons

Do you own Heart of Thorns or Path of Fire, and want to get your hands on some shiny legendaries? If yes, then Generation Two Legendary Weapons could be what you are looking for. Those weapons will give you the ultimate convenience in the game, and well, you can easily flex with them.

What are Generation Two Legendary Weapons

Generation Two Legendaries function just like any Legendary Weapon in the game, but they were released during the Heart of Thorns and the Path of Fire Expansions. Moreover, you can’t obtain them if you don’t own any of the two expansions because the materials and resources needed to craft them are tied to the regions within the expansions.

Those weapons can’t be sold because they become bound to account as soon as you obtain them, and they share the same stats as Ascended gear, but they usually look much better and have their own effects.

You can change the stats on those weapons whenever you’d like just press right-clicking on the item and hitting the Customize button. Moreover, changing skins on these weapons does not cost Transmutation Charges, and removing Sigils and Runes does not require any Upgrade Extractors.

But wait, there is more. Those weapons can also be used across all characters that can equip them, at the same time. This is all thanks to the Legendary Armory which allows you to see and equip all the legendaries you unlocked across all your characters.

How to get Gen Two Legendaries

To get Generation Two Legendary Weapons, you have to place a precursor and three other gifts in the Mystic Forge.

  • Gift of Maguuma Mastery Gift of Maguuma Mastery or Gift of Desert Mastery Gift of Desert Mastery
  • Gift of Fortune - Mystic Tribute Mystic Tribute
  • Weapon Precursor
  • Weapon-specific Gift

One thing to note is that when Heart of Thorns was released, we got four new legendaries, and they are Astralaria, HOPE, Chuka and Champawat, and Nevermore. Those four have a slightly different way to obtain, and they somewhat share the same path as Generation One Legendaries.

For Eureka (Mace) and anything that was released after that, there is a bit more flexibility when it comes to crafting those legendaries, and we will cover both ways in detail in their respective steps down below.

Step 1: Complete Map Exploration

One of the main gifts needed to craft those weapons would be the Exploration Gift that you obtain from doing 100% map completion on either the Heart of Thorns or Path of Fire maps.

This time around though, players have more flexibility as to which maps they prefer to explore. This is because you can use either the Gift of Maguuma Mastery  Gift of Maguuma Mastery which is obtained by exploring the Heart of Thorns maps, or the Gift of Desert Mastery Gift of Desert Mastery which is obtained by exploring the Path of Fire maps.

There is a small exception though, and that is that twelve out of sixteen Gen 2 Legendaries can use either or, but Astralaria, HOPE, Chuka and Champawat, and Nevermore can only use the Gift of Maguuma Mastery.

Just as a note, you DO NOT need both Gifts, one of them is enough, and you can see which Gift the weapon you are trying to craft needs needs in the table that is at the end of step 4.

Funerary Incense

Funerary Incense is a material that can be purchased from different vendors across the Crystal Desert. Buying them does not cost gold directly, however, they do cost other materials. There are three methods to buy Funerary Incense, and two of them are time-gated but one of them isn’t. Here are the methods in which you can buy Funerary Incense:

  • Time-gated
    • All the Renown Heart Heart vendors in Domain of Vabbi (1 per day per merchant)

Step 2: Getting the Mystic Tribute

The Mystic Tribute is where things start to get a little expensive. This item will cost you quite the gold because it needs not just one Gift of Condensed Might, and not just one Gift of Condensed Magic, but two of them.

Here are the materials needed to craft a Mystic Tribute.

  • 2 Gifts of Condensed Might
  • 2 Gifts of Condensed Magic
  • Mystic Clover 77 Mystic Clovers
  • Mystic Coin 250 Mystic Coins

Mystic Clovers

Mystic Clovers are probably the most annoying item you can farm for, and this is because it will either take time to get, or you will have to gamble your way to get it. However, to find out all about them, you can see the dedicated guide on how to get Mystic Clovers in Guild Wars 2.

Mystic Coins

Mystic Coins are also a bit annoying to get because they are expensive and time-gated. You can purchase them from the Trading Post, get them from the Wizard’s Vault, or get them from Bags of Mystic Coins.

To craft the Gifts of Condensed Might and Magic, you have to purchase the recipes from Miyani which is located in Lion’s Arch. Each gift costs Gold Coin 10 gold, and you only have to unlock them once, and then use them an infinite number of times.

  •  50 Piles of Radiant Dust

Note that you have to craft two of each and the material listed in the table above accounts for just one Gift of Condensed might and one Gift of Condensed Magic. So doing the math, all you need to do is double those materials.

Once you have all four ingredients in your inventory, just take them to the Mystic Forge and let the magic happen.

Step 3: Getting the Generation Two Precursor

Unlike the first generation, precursors for Generation Two can’t be purchased off the Trading Post and they are bound to account. Moreover, there are two methods by which you can get them.

When it comes to Astralaria (Axe), HOPE (Pistol), Chuka and Champawat (Short bow), and Nevermore (Staff), the process is similar to Gen 1 where you have to head over to Grandmaster Craftsman Hobbs and purchase the different volumes. All the other Generation Two Legendaries will require you to purchase three tiers of recipes and craft each one of them.

Obtaining it through Collections

This method only applies to the four Gen 2 legendaries mentioned above, but to begin, open your Achievements tab and go to Collections > Legendary Weapons. This is where you will see a list of all locked achievements for every precursor that can be obtained through this method.

To unlock the weapon of choice, make sure you have the necessary masteries by going to the Mastery Menu > Central Tyria > Legendary Crafting. Then head over to Grandmaster Craftsman Hobbs and purchase Vol. 1 of the precursor that you are trying to unlock. Complete the collection, and salvage the item that you got from it, then come back to Hobbs and purchase Vol. 2.

Repeat this process till you complete all the volumes and obtain the Ascended precursor weapon.

Getting it through recipe crafting

Since ArenaNet changed the way Legendaries are obtained, you no longer need to complete a collection to obtain the newer Generation Two Precursors, but rather it works like this now:

  • Obtain recipes for three different tiers of the Precursor from Grandmaster Craftsman Hobbs.
  • Craft the first tier, then salvage it.
  • You will obtain material from salvaging the item, and you will use it, and a bunch of other material, mainly Legendary Shards to craft the 2nd and 3rd tiers.
  • The final tier will be the Precursor.

Tiers 1 and 2 of the recipes will need level 450 crafting profession, and level 3 will need level 500. You can only unlock the next tier after crafting the item from the previous tier.

I also mentioned Legendary Shards. These are items that you can start crafting after unlocking the Precursor recipe that requires it, and the Shards vary based on the legendary you are crafting.

Tier 1 costs 30 Legendary Shards, Tier 2 costs 60 Legendary Shards, and Tier 3 costs 100 Legendary Shards. So the total will be 190 Legendary Shards to craft one Generation Two precursor.

You can obtain those Legendary Shards by crafting them and using special Tributes.

Those Tributes can be obtained from vendors all around Tyria. You can purchase those Tributes in the following currencies:

  • Volatile Magic 15 Volatile Magic
  • Lumps of Aurillium 15 Lump of Aurillium
  • Airship Parts 15 Airship Parts
  • Leyline Crystals 15 Ley Line Crystals
  • Trade Contracts 15 Trade Contracts
  • Unbound Magic 15 Unbound Magic

A full list of Tribute vendors can be found in this wiki link.

Mystic Curio is also required to craft the precursor, and you will have seven ways to craft it, one for each tier 5 material that exists. They are all the same, so it doesn’t matter which one you craft.

Step 4: Getting the Weapon Gift

Every weapon will have its own Weapon Gift, and obtaining them is pretty straightforward, but they will cost some gold to do so. One thing to keep note of is that the newer set of Gen 2 legendaries will use Mystic Runestones whereas the first four will use Icy Runestones.

To craft the Weapon-unique Gift, you will need to place the following items in the Mystic Forge.

  • 100 Icy Runestones or 100 Mystic Runestones
  • Gift of the Mists
  • Crafting Material Gift (Depends on the weapon)
  • Themed Gift or 100 Legendary Shards

Icy Runestones

This item is only used for Astralaria, HOPE, Chuka and Champawat, and Nevermore. To get them, you have to head over to Frostgorge Sound and find Rojan the Penitent. He is a vendor that sells you Icy Runestones for 1 gold a piece and you need 100 pieces.

Rojan the Penitent will not be on his post during the Jormag meta event, and if players fail the event, then he will not sell you any of his goods.

Mystic Runestones

Mystic Runestone

For the remaining twelve Gen 2 legendaries, you will have to purchase Mystic Runestones, and this item can be purchased at Miyani in Lion’s Arch. Each one will cost 1 gold, and you need Scholar of Secrets mastery unlocked before you can actually buy them.

You will never need both Icy Rune Stones and Mystic Runestones together. If you are not sure which one you need, refer to the below table.

Gift of the Mists

Gift of Glory and War

Combine the following items in the Mystic Forge to create the Gift of the Mists.

  • Gift of Glory
    • Purchased from Miyani in Lion’s Arch for Shard of Glory 250 Shards of Glory
  • Gift of Battle
    • Obtained from the WvW Gift of Battle Reward Track
  • Gift of War
    • Purchased from Miyani in Lion’s Arch for Memory of Battle 250 Memories of Battle
  • Cube of Stabilized Dark Energy
    • Can be crafted for Ball of Dark Energy 1 Ball of Dark Energy and Stabilizing Matrix 75 Stabilizing Matrices

Crafting Material Gift

Depending on the weapon, the Crafting Material Gift could defer, but in general, it consists of collecting 4 tiers of a specific material and bringing them to the designated crafting station. Keep note that you have to be rank 400 in the respective crafting profession to craft those Gifts. Here is a list of Crafting Material Gifts.

Gift Crafting Crafting Proficiency Cost for crafting
Gift of Metal weaponsmith Level 400 Weaponsmith
  • 250 Platinum Ingots
  • 250 Darksteel Ingots
  • 250 Mithril Ingots

  • 250 Piles of Crystalline Dust

Be sure to purchase the recipes for every gift from Miyani for 10 gold each, otherwise, you won’t be able to craft them.

Themed Gift or 100 Legendary Shards

The Axe, Pistol, Short Bow, and Staff will need the traditional Themed Gift, but the other Gen 2 legendaries need 100 Legendary Shards instead. Just like the Legendary Shards you got for the Precursor, you will need 100 more of the same type for the Weapon Gift.
