Getting Legendary Weapons is a remarkable milestone, and anyone who does get one, should be given a tap on the back, so will you be the next person to obtain a Legendary? If yes, then you landed in the right GW2 Guide as we will be going over what are Legendary Weapons and how to get them.
This guide is split into different segments, one for each Generation of weapons that exists in the game as of December 2023. Every segment will cover how you can obtain the Legendary Weapons within a specific Generation, and a link for a detailed guide on every generation can be found by the end of each segment.
What are Legendary Weapons in Guild Wars 2
Legendary Weapons in GW2 are the final frontier of weapons that every player should aim for. They provide the same stats as Ascended weapons do, but they have extra functionalities that improve convenience and elevate fashion. Here are all the benefits that you would get out of a Legendary Weapon.
Unlimited Stat Change
Just like any legendary, the stats of these weapons can be changed at any point in time, free of charge as long as you are outside of combat. This means you don’t have to spend your precious gold, time, and bank slots to farm, buy, and store the same weapon with different stats.
Goes into the Legendary Armory
Any Legendary Weapon that you unlock will go directly into your Legendary Armory, and this means that any of your characters can equip a different copy of the weapon at the same time as long as they support it. In other words, not only you don’t have to farm this weapon anymore, but with a full set of Legendaries, you can probably stop farming weapons for your whole account.
Cosmetic benefits
For fashion lovers, it is good to know that changing the skin of Legendary Weapons does not cost Transmutation Charges, so players can mix and match to their heart’s content. Moreover, every weapon will give unique visual effects that can be seen on your character.
- Footsteps
- Draw / Stow effects
- Projectile animations
- Sound effects
- Auras
- Special crit effects
- Kill effect (Generation 3 only)
Legendary Weapons are also split into Generations to help simplify when they were released relative to the expansions. Further down in the guide, we will be going over how to get every single generation, starting with generation one for all the players who don’t have any expansion unlocked yet.
Generation One Legendary Weapons
The first generation of legendaries can be obtained from Core Tyria, and even as a free-to-play player, you can still get your hands on one of those. To get them, you have to go to the Mystic Forge and combine a
Most of the Legendary Weapons within this generation are relatively easier to get than other generations, with the exception of Eternity, which is a Legendary Greatsword that can be crafted by combining Twilight and Sunrise (Legendary Greatswords) together. Moreover, this generation of legendaries is the only one that has underwater weapons.

Generation Three Legendary Weapons
This set of Legendary Weapons was introduced in End of Dragons, and the skins are themed after every Elder Dragon in the game. There is a base skin for the third generation of Legendaries and it starts with Aurene and then can be reskinned to Zhaitan, Mordremoth, Kralkatorrik, Jormag, Primordus, or Soo-Won.
Players can obtain a free precursor for this generation by completing Tier 2 of Seasons of the Dragons and obtaining the Fragment of Prismatic Light then exchanging it at Leivas.
To get a Generation Three Legendary Weapon, you have to combine in the Mystic Forge a
Once you get any of Aurene’s Legendaries, you can obtain any of the other Elder Dragon Legendary skins by purchasing an Uncharged Fragment from Levias and charging it by completing the repeatable collection tied to it. The end goal is to complete the Dragon’s meta-achievement on the respective map while wielding Aurene’s weapon to charge the Fragment. Then you have to take that Charged Fragment back to Levias to purchase the Elder Dragon skin of choice.

GW2 Legendary Weapons fun facts
- You cannot sell or salvage Legendary Weapons.
- If you remove a Sigil from a non-account-bound Legendary Weapon, it will automatically bind it to your account and add it to your Legendary Armory.
- Deleting Legendary Weapons will unlock the skin.
- If you have Legendary Weapons in both hands, then the footstep effect of the main-hand weapon will override that of the off-hand.
That’s all you need to know about Legendary Weapons. If you are still looking for a different adventure in the game, why not look into Legendary Armor?
